Documented national history tells us that the nation's first president had no children. But the oral history of the descendants of West Ford tells a different story. Portraits and sketches of George Washington and West Ford at similar ages illustrate a resemblance between the two men that Ford's descendants attribute to family ties.

18th century journalists certainly noticed the similarities between the two gentlemen. Newspapers of the day speculated upon the reason why West Ford, the colored caretaker at the Mount Vernon estate, looked so much like the property's deceased, famous one-time owner, George Washington.
