"I am an invisible man. No, I am not a spook like those who haunted Edgar Allan Poe; nor am I one of your Hollywood-movie ectoplasms. I am a man of substance, of flesh and bone, fiber and liquids--and I might even be said to possess a mind. I am invisible, understand, simply because people refuse to see me."
- Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man"
Traveler Weekly Newspaper, 1968
Old newspaper front page of The Traveler Weekly, 1968. The paper was established in the fall of 1966 as a single 8 1/2 x 11 sheet with local news items and Elise's editorials. Elise became the first African American woman to edit and publish a newspaper in the state of Illinois. When asked why she started it, she replied, "I felt that the city of Peoria needs a newspaper that focuses on African American issues, concerns, and accomplishments. A newspaper will give me a vehicle to voice my thoughts and concerns." The goal of her editorials were geared toward provoking a positive dialogue and a forum for change. The newspaper continues to focus on the true principles of democracy and to keep it a living reality to all Americans, without regard to race, color or creed.
